Toyota Forums _ Toyota Yaris Forum _ Air Bag On Off Light

Quick question,

has anyone noticed that sometimes when there is a passenger in the passenger's seat, at times the airbag light says off? does it turn on at a certain speed or something? can i set it always to be on?

Anything wierd about that light?

I have never seen this :) guess you should check it.

I, after 2 or 3 years, saw my SRS warning light on, but it stays on all the time, also the horn stopped working, but since where I live some people may shoot you if you use it... lol, I left it as it is lol.

The only light I remember seing turning on when a passenger was in the front seat was the seatbelt, which, too... stopped working after a hard crash a Chevy Astrovan did to me.

The SRS airbag engages when a certain weight has been achieved in the seat. Basically, if the passenger is too light, the sensor will detect this and will not enable the airbag. (Usually, if you are to be involved in an accident, the lighter person could actually be killed from the airbag, thats the point of the sensor).

Try this:

Have an average-size adult sit in the seat, then have a small child sit there. With the adult it will say "on"; with the child it will say "off".

This is because the switch is weight-sensored (somewhere around 85 lbs, though I'm not really sure), which is to prevent the airbag from popping out in a crash if a child is sitting in the passenger seat. This is a very important safety feature, since an airbag would actually hurt a small child more than the crash itself.

My 2007 Yaris is like this, as was my 2005 Corolla.

Hope that helped.
