I have a 1981 Tercel with and automatic transmission. There is a persistent problem when the engine is warm and trie to start it. It look like the carburator is flood. A mecanic shop did the carburator maintenance (carb kit and cleaning). But it's still the same. When I stop for more or less then 20 minutes, it's hard to restart it. Any idea? Choke pull off?
If you want to sell it pm me.....
It's been over 10 years since I have worked on the first generation Tercel, but I think it sounds like the choke pull off.
Try taking the top off the air cleaner when you go to start it hot, and stick a screw driver down the carb to hold the choke open.
If it starts ok then you know it is the pull off.
I am working for a new Toyota dealer here in Sask. so we don't have any manuals for anything older than 1990.
If you have any more questions, just email me trypolar@hotmail.com
Hope this helps.
sounds to me like vapor lock. i had problems like that on my rx7 (carbureted of course). it sucks and there is not mutch you can do, if that is the problem. you could try a fuel additive, i believe its called iso-heat, it helped me some.
