Hello,
I have an 87 automatic 4x4 22rec that will not shift into low gear when I stop. When I pull up to a stop sign or light and stop it always starts back off in 2nd which is really hard on the engine and my big tires. What I have been doing for YEARS is pulling it into 1st just before stopping and that seems to help it to start in 1st. There has to be a simple answer for this and I just cant find it. I have taken it to several transmission shops called dealers etc with no luck. The dealers say they have never had any problems with them. I know of two other people with the same problem. And it cant be a bad transmission. I have had the truck for 10 years with no other problems realated to anything much less transmission. It has 200k on it, had 110K when I bought it and had the problem then. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks
Caleb
On your throttle body, there are two cables. If it's anything like my 3.0 liter, the bottom cable is your throttle cable. The one on top is your "kickdown" cable. When you let off the gas and come to a stop this cable pulls on a level inside the trans which activates the 1st gear solenoid so it downshifts to first. Try adjusting the kickdown cable and see if that helps. Best of luck. Let me know if this works for ya.
