I've a 1990 P/U with a 22RE motor (EFI) and there is a noise coming from the exhaust side of the motor that is driving me crazy. It sounds like a flapping/buzzing noise that only activates when the motor is gassed. With the gas off, either driving or at idle there is no noise. So far I've tried loosening/removing both drive belts to see if it was either the water pump or the alternator making that noise, but no deal. It's not coming from there. From its location it sounds like its coming from the exhaust manifold itself or around that locality...
Any ideas?
Exhaust leak, maybe?
Yep, my conclusions too. Been under there and there are a few pinholes that may be the cause. System replacement should take care of that. Thanks for the reply.
Cheers
Conclusion of my local wrench is timing chain slap. This deduction after going over every inch of the motor with a stethoscope. He fixed a few pinhole leaks on the exhaust, but that wasn't the source of the noise. Looks like I'm up for a new chain and guides....
Hi longtall, did the chain and guides fix the issue? I seem to have the same prob,
thx
Im just putting my 22R back together because I ignored that sound. The chain ate a hole in the timing cover which resulted in water in the oil. I just torqued the head 20 minutes ago.
DO NOT ignore that sound. It will get expensive.
That problem seems pretty common... it happened to my '95 22RE Xtra cab when it had under 40 or 50k miles on it. The plastic chain guide had snapped off. I replaced the guide (and chain, since I already had it all apart) and now I'm at 140k miles and all is well. Was the OEM chain guide just a shoddy part? How many other folks have had the same problem and on what year models?
