My wife's 06 XRS is coming up on 60,000 mile. Up to this point all service has been at the dealer. Like most of us, our finances are beginning to strain, and I figured I'd do the service myself. I've rebuilt several engines and hot rodded a few more, so this is well within my ability. I have a 73 18RG engine in my Sprite that requires measuring the distance between the cam and valve bucket, and then you have to remove the cam, and replace shims under the bucket to make up for the required distance from what was measured. A time consuming process best done at a cold setting and a big handful of various shims. So how are the new engines done? Hot or Cold? Anyone point me to a good service manual? Any other suggestions when doing the 60K service? Otherwise I'll just follow the service manual.

In adjusting the valve first you must consider that there is a relationship between the high position on each cam lobe for each cylinder respective of which stroke the cylinder happens to be in. We are going to adjust each valve at a time relative to the position of its peer valve ( or cam lobe ), either the intake or exhaust. Remember to always check your car parts

on those newer engines, adjusting the valves is not a regular maintenance and shouldnt be required
