The fan stopped running the day after I bought the car. It seemed to be working just fine. The controls still light up, I have no warning lights. I can't find any fuses that are blown. Heck, I can't find a fuse that is supposed to be on the passenger side near the dash according to my manual, so I can't check that one. Anyone have something I can check before a local mechanic charges me hundreds of dollars to tear apart the dash and fix this thing? And lead to something else because he tore apart the dash.

I saw something here and on MSN that refers to the A/C Amplifier for 1998 and 1999, but not on the 1997. I am assuming they use the same part. I can hear the relay clicking, the buttons light up like they want the temp. to change, the A/C compressor is turning on and the air that has natural circulation due to the car moving is cold. The fan just isn't blowing.

The information that I saw about the A/C amplifier is looking like a nearly $700 repair, I sure would like to avoid that.

One of the posts said theirs went off and comes back on and they have no lights. Mine has lights, went off, doens't come on.

Cheers,
Tim

I did a little checking under the dash. The relay is below the driver side dash is clicking. Also, there is a connector that I can access from the driver side behind the controls. It has 12 volts across the connector that is coming from the relay. I checked it with it disconnected.

A local shop mentioned that I could check the resistor? Not sure where that is.

He also said to check and see if I can get to the heater fan under the passenger side dash.

Anyone have any information that can help?

I will appreciate help you can give.

Just ran across your post. You have probably fixed this already. If not, the blower resistor on the Camry is above the glovebox. You need to remove the glovebox to get at the resistor. I would expect that the Avalon is the same.

If you have fixed this problem, please report the fix, so that othewrs may see it.

I ended up replacing the blower motor. I found the blower motor was really easy to get too under the glove compartment. I checked the connector, with it disconnected, and it had voltage for all speed settings but the fan would not turn. Inspection of the motor reveiled a lot of brush dust in the motor housiing. I was able to get a new motor and cage that was about as close to factory as I can expect for about $140.00. It may have been less, I can't remember. But, it took less than 20 minutes to take down the panel, put the new blower in, and put the panel back. It has been working great ever since. I suspect that 180,000 miles, and the automatic climate control running the blower almost continuously, this thing put in it's time and the brushes were just worn out.

I noticed that when the old blower was hooked up, if the squirrel cage was repositioned just a little it would cause the blower to turn on. It was just worn out and coming to a stop where the brushes were not making good contact. Be careful so it doesn't turn in your hand.

I have 1999 Toyota Avalon nearing 100K mi, and the climate control fan has been baking a very loud vibrating noise, even at the lowest level. I suspect it may also be the blower. How did you manage to replace the blower motor ? I don't want to damage just trying to get to the blower =P Any help appreciated, thanks!

Getting the blower out isn't exactly hard, but it is time consuming. Prepare to spend an afternoon doing the job. I can get you a new OEM Toyota Blower with Fan for 148.00 shipped... assuming you are CONUS. This should remedy your problem, which is probably a worn motor bearing. PM if interested.

Just bought a '95 Avalon XL last Saturday. I'm having problems with Fuse # 35, which contols the air conditioning and rear defrost. Depressing the a/c button with the fan in any speed or pushing the defrost button blows the fuse every time. When I test drove the car on Friday and Saturday it worked fine... I bought it from someone I know so I don't suspect any tampering. All other fuses look fine. I don't know how to test relays to see if they work... Your help is greatly appreciated.
