Have I Broken My Gear Box? Options

Hi everyone! I have an auto hatchback corolla seca and I know this question sounds silly but i'm actually really worried. Tonight I was sorting through paperwork in my car and I placed some paperclips to rest on the gear box down near where the gear stick moves but they fell through! (I didn't realise there was a gap to fall through). I can't hear anything when I move the gear stick and it seems to work fine but I am worried the clips might catch on something inside the car and destroy the gear box. Is this possible? Should I take my car to get looked at (I really hope I don't have to because I know how stupid this sounds having paperclips destroy the gears). There is no way for me to get inside the gear box to have a look other than go underneith the car which I wouldn't have a clue what to do or where to look. Please let me know.... any mechanical advice would be really great. Thankyou!
