I would like to get the Toyota roof rack put on my new '10 Matrix but I want to see one installed first. Or at least see a photo of one taken at a completely perpendicular angle to the side of the car.

What I want to know is whether the crossbars are level, or follow the slope of the roof. If I put a canoe up there, I'd like it to be level and not pointing up to the sky.

If anyone knows, or can provide a photo, I would be grateful.

-Tim

Hi - Did you ever get this question answered somewhere? I'm getting ready to purchase a 2009 Matrix. If you use the Toyota site "Build Your Own", you can add the rack and rotate the car picture around, but it's hard to tell if the crossbars are level. It looks like they slope upward just a bit with the roofline. I think I'll ask the dealer if the rack can simply be installed in a more forward position on the roof, at a point where the crossbars would be level. Janet

just bought a 2010 matrix with factory rack. they are not level, and yes, it makes the kayaks point skyward. they are also seated way back, but do not interfere with opening the rear hatch door.

we tried some Malone J-racks mounted on the factory crossbar. they worked but were a pain to install. i am looking at new feet for the Thule bars I used on my 2001 Accord, but there seems to be an issue with Thule mounts and a roof with a factory rack. if I could go back I would avoid the factory rack, altho it could carry a single kayak flat it seems.

My son carries 2 kayaks on his 2009 Matrix. They looked fine to me. He has them on a kayak rack. I don't know the name of his rack.
