hey all. Im newto the site but joined for a purpose. So im driving an '01 Avalon and im having, of course, problems with the woofer. It had been blown/ripped for quite some time until i decided to try to fix it with some adhesive. It actually worked but after awhile its starting to rip again, which i can tell by the sound hah. Im pretty fed up with this little menace and i've decided im going to go with a different approach and by a new subwoofer, and use the adapter from the stock one to connect it to my car.

Now, there's a few things i've found out about doing this, but I'm not so sure about it seeing im pretty new to the sub woofer area. Firstly, will this even work? i cant imagine it wouldn't, though I'm a little confused on what sub woofer i would be able to buy seeing the 8" stock one is pretty wimpy. I'm not looking for anything major i just want a small (looking at about 10") sub for a little extra bass when playing my music. Does the wattage/OHM matter?

Ive also removed the 8" woofer and have tried to remove the adapter thing from it but can't exactly figure it out/get it disconnected. Does anyone have experience with this that can sort of give me the way to do it?

Also, if anyone has some suggestions for what sub or subs i should be looking at can give them to me that would be great! :p

Please help! getting frustrated lol!
Thanks!!

If you better sound, then wattage does matter. If not just replace the stock 8" sub with aftermarket with the same wattage required. If you're going to upgrade with a 10" sub and want good sound, get a sub in a ported box with the assist of an amp. I have a stock JBL system in my Camry and added a 10" JL Audio W6 with 500 watts pushing it. Everyone that hears my beat is impressed wit just my small addition. It sounds clean they say. In my car I didn't want to go with the extreme with massive bass. Just clean and crisp is all I wanted.

nice nice that sounds like it'd be a good deal, but i'm tryin to avoid having to go with an amp.. which i should have mentioned in the first post thing but w.e. I mean, if it comes down to it i might go with an amp but my goal is to find out if i can just hook up a new, larger amp to the same hook-up as the stock 8" one.. and if i can, then do it up hah.

yeah you can hook up a new larger amp to the same set up. does your stock amp just power the sub or does it power all front and back? you don't want to push too much watts in the stock speakers or you'd end up with the same problem with your original 8" sub.

You may want to verify that the sub woofer you plan on replacing the broken one with works at the same OHM rating. Often, custom factory sound systems such as JBL or BOSE use 2ohm ratings, while most car systems are 4 ohm. It really isn't the wattage you should be worrying about at this point, rather whether it will even work without blowing your factory amplifier. (Which BTW is much more expensive than you care to know) I can get you a brand new OEM woofer that will bolt right in for 240 shipped to your door. It is a little pricy compared to some cheaper aftermarket subs, but will ensure compatability and sound quality that the car was meant to have. If you have to replace it every 9 years, that's not so bad. Try lightly tinting your rear windows to reduce the amount of heat the area sees, this should help the longevity of the upholstery as well as the fragile speaker construction.
Email me if you're interested or have more questions.
