Howdy, I live in one state and my daughter goes to school in another. She's not too car savvy - can drive and check oil, that's about it. When I went out to visit her last week we took a drive and heard this loud grinding sound coming from the back end of her 2004 Corolla. Noise is there only when car is rolling and not related to RPMs or brake pressure. Just constant and gets louder at higher speeds. Took it to a mechanic (not the dealer) on the day I had to leave. He sez it's a rear wheel bearing assy that's bad -needs replacing and its a $400 job! I've looked on line and see the bearing/hub assembly is ~$80. Does anybody know if there are removal/installation problems or are there some other parts that may have been damaged that could need replacement that would make the cost so much higher? Thanks. -T

it does sound like it is a rear wheel bearing, there is not much to replacing it if you have the tools, they are just charging you labor to replace it, plus if they are using a toyota factory wheel bearing assembly, the price would be alot more
