Hello!

I just recently purchased a 1986 Toyota Tercel 4wd 6speed (with the extra low gear!) wagon, and I wanted to see if anyone had any useful info for me about prolonging the life of this vehicle. It has 230,000 miles on it but still runs like a champ!

However, I believe the tranny is taking a dive, I've lost 4th gear and i'm sure the teeth are almost gone on 3rd, I'm on the hunt for a new transmission, however does anyone know where I might find the best options? a few more questions;

What years are compatible with this vehicle for parts? My research leads me to believe I can take anything from an '83-'86 tercel wagon 4wd for parts, can anyone confirm or deny?

Also, whats the vote on getting a used transmission? Is it possible to even get one new? Any ideas on the likliness that a used transmission will last?

And last I belive that the transfer case is inside the transmission, correct?

Thanks! Any info or answers would be great!

They made the Tercel 4x4 Wagon between 83 and 87.
As for a transfer case, there isn't really one. The transmission drives the front and rear constantly, with just a syncronized coupling disconnecting the rear when not wanted or needed.
The extra low gear can only be engaged in 4wd.
I had a 84 and a 85 when I lived in Nova Scotia.
The best little car you can get for a Canadian winter.
I wish I had one for these Saskatchewan winters.
The old Tercels were almost bullet proof. Someone must have totally abused it to blow out the gears.
I drove the crap out of mine and never hurt them a bit.
About the only thing that goes wrong with them is that the choke gets gummed up once and a while. Spray it down with some carb cleaner and it will start like a charm again.
I dont know aout the availability of a used tranny.
If you have any other questions about them, email me at trypolar@hotmail.com
