05 Corolla Intake, Engine Light Options

Hello, I've got an 05 Corolla with the 1.8 liter engine, and I decided to put an intake on it. Once I installed it it was running fine, but the engine light came on after a bit of driving, didnt get it checked but I'm almost sure that its regarding the MAF from having modified the intake. Has anyone else had this happen, just curious to know if its common.

I did a decent job too, got a cone air filter (Spectre brand) thats sucking air from almost under the battery, got an intake hose that goes to a MAF sensor tube, connected to the stock intake hose that goes to the throttle body.

Also, wondering if anyone has had problems with water with their intake setup, it looks like it could be slightly problematic without a bypass filter.

Are you using an oiled filter media?

You could try undoing the negative battery terminal for a couple minutes and reinstalling it. That should clear the light, but if it comes back you may have other problems. Do you know what the codes are for the CEL?

Yes it is a cotton filter lightly oiled. Does this suggest that the oil will not work well with the MAF?

Also, I haven't had time to look at the CEL code, if it persists I might have to get it read. The car still runs fine though, just the CEL makes me wonder if anything strange would occur.

It sounds like the oil from the filter gunked up the MAF sensor and that's probably why you have the CEL. but without the codes we won't know for sure. By gunking up the MAF it's making your engine run a bit lean.

I did take a look at it, and it appears to be a bit dirty, I havent attempted to clean it yet but could it be cleaned gently with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a q-tip?

NO NO NO NO NO! Under no circumstances should the MAF sensor be cleaned with a Q-Tip! Buy some MAF cleaner from your local auto parts store. Get the one made by CRC:

By using a Q-Tip you run the risk of damaging the MAF wire sensor inside. Just spray the wires down. Don't be shy with the cleaner, drench it with the stuff, let it dry off and replace, it's that easy.

Ok, so I cleaned the MAF sensor with the MAF cleaner, reinstalled it, and then went over to AutoZone to get the OBD II scanner to get the code, and it said low fuel pressure... could have been a coincidence I suppose but the code has been cleared for now, Ill drive it around and see if the CEL comes back on. By the way the MAF sensor was a bit dirty, after I cleaned it I noticed a white dot that I hadn't seen before lol hidden by particulates, so its good to have cleaned it anyways.
