I've had this '99 RAV4 for almost 2 weeks and now this problem has happened twice. Driving down the interstate and find the steering wheel is locked up as I try to exit. It takes about all my strength to muscle the car off the highway and through town to my house where it just as suddenly frees itself. I took it back to the used car dealer who supposedly checked the car over and couldn't find anything wrong (I'm trusting them because why would they want that sort of bad reputation from one of their cars? They also specialize in imports and prefer the Japanese cars so I'm thinking they know what they are doing). The mechanic surmises that it was a fluke problem, rock caught somewhere it shouldn't be or something so I go back to driving the car. Not even a week later the same thing happens, steering freezes up and then goes back to normal after a bit.

Does anyone have any clue what could make this happen? Could it be related to the problem I'm reading about in this post? I obviously want to take it back in for servicing but would prefer to have some insight so that I can better talk to the mechanic.

I'd appreciate anyone's input. Thank you.

Laura

The Rav4 has two intermediate steering shafts in the colunm. There is a problem with them wearing till they start popping when turning the steering wheel. Toyota has a TSB on this and fixes it under warranty if yours is still covered. The extended warranty people will not fix it till it fails. Evidently I get to go through a locking phase before I get to the failure phase. Toyota says they have never seen these fail. BS, I hope I am not driving it when it fails and the steering wheel is no longer connected to the front wheels.
