Looking To Buy 3rd Gen 4runner - Engine Advice?, Other tips and suggestions? Options

I'm looking at buying a third generation (1996-2002) 4Runner, and I was wondering how the 4 Cylinder engine is. I know it's pretty reliable, but in terms of drive-ability and passing power, is it as good as the V6? I won't be doing any towing, so that's not a major concern. Fuel economy is a secondary concern, I won't be putting a lot of miles on this vehicle.

Also looking for any advice about things to look for in a third Gen 4 runner. Must have options, common trouble spots and that kind of thing.
