My Avalon 2000 XLS's rear speaker sounds like the cone is broken and needs to be replaced. I have the JBL sound system and have read that I need the JBL powered sub-woofer speaker which was made for the Avalons. Toyota wants over $250 for the speaker, plus install. I found a place in FL, Simply Speakers, that fixes the speakers for about $40. But, I need to remove it first. I've removed the cover on the rear deck that also houses the brake light. But before I buy the probably metric sized nut remover (the 3/8" is close but no cigar) has anyone done this and any suggestions or warnings?

remove the woofer and chek the damage, sometimes tears are easily fixed with a light glue (wood glue works well).
u should be able 2 replace the sub with any 8" sub on the market. all u needa du for install is bolt in2 bracket n plug the speaker wires in. if the aftermarket sub doesnt have the same mounting holes , just drill holes in the metal rim.

My large rear speaker died about three months ago. I went to Ricky Smith Audio. They installed a replacement speaker for $120 (total).

The system has bass sound like it never had before. I forget what the replacement was, but it was a high quality speaker.

You can remove it yourself, and send it or take it to a speaker repair place and for about $40 have it reconed and save $210 plus labor.Good luck

I have the same problem with my 2000 Avalon. I've removed the speaker cover and 3rd brake light and have removed the 10mm bolts but can't seem to get the speaker housing out of the rear deck. Do I have to climb in the trunk or something? The hole isn't big enough to bring it through the top, at least not without doing some cutting that I can see. THANKS!

I finally got it out a couple of weeks ago and you DO have to crawl into the trunk. What I found out is after removing the 10mm screws you then need to crawl into the trunk and slide the assembly toward the rear of the car and remove the two phillips screws that are then visible. Get out and go back up to the rear deck and work it around until you get it out. Removing the screws allows just enough slack between the speaker and bracket to work the whole thing out from the top. Looking forward to trying it out after I get it repaired.
