Almost sounds like a cracked block. I think a hairline crack in the block would do this.
But, there is a water temp sensor just to the right of the spark plugs, and screws into the block. My mother had a similar problem, but not to the degree of yours. She has what you have, but a 95. I put the water temp sensor in, and changed the smaller cat in the back. The far rear flange rotted off, where the muffler connects. I blamed that on a partly plugged muffler, and backed up condensation enough to rot that area. Also proved to provide poor air flow, and she had 130k. They backed up into a curb, and that would plug up the muffler, which would mainly loosen up some rust and stuff. I do rember changing the stat, too. I could not get it to open, but the gasket was in very strange condition, sort of crinkled up, cracked, and baked. Sort of like a dead snake lying in the desert for a week, or so. May have been part of the excessive heat issue. If this triggers any memories, this may be your issue.
If the radiator rots out, they go in a line, top to bottom, and to the far right of center, and on the not too visible part. But you need to loosen the shroud at least on top, to peer in. If it is the rad, you will see the problem right there. Yours has a higher cap radiator, I think all the LESC models do, and is probably ok.
Good luck.
