Hard Start When Hot. Options

Howdy all,
Found this site from a search and figured I'd post a question. I have an 85 Corolla with a 1.6L Carb engine. I really don't have much of a history of the car before I got it and not really hip to yota's in general, but here is what I've done and whats going on. The car had a blown head gasket that was just replaced and the head was resurfaced so all is well there. The carb has really been giving me alot of issues with bad idle, hard starts etc. and I decided to rebuild it. After the rebuild the car will now run pretty smooth going down the road, the idle is great but after driving it and shutting it down I turns over alot before starting, when it does start its sounds and smells flooded. I have tried both holding the accelerator wide open and not touching it at all, holding it open seems to help a little but still very hard starting. Any idea's I should look into next?

sounds like the float is a little high, lets raw fuel into the intake manafold--doulbe check float level.
