Does anyone know of any in-depth overview or info on the Prius nav system? (Presumably the same as the Matrix, which I'm also considering.) Some indication of what areas are/aren't fully covered is probably asking too much!

Thanks for any leads. This is probably an FAQ I could search for... if you could search in the Club.

We use ours and love it.... there are some places that the route guidence system can't kick in but then it still shows street maps so you can figure out how to get to your destination. We love the POI (points of interest) because we can take a look around town for a restaurant and then just select it as the destination and go (really works well for rest stops on the freeway). But the one downfall we thought is that it WON'T let you do any destination setting while in motion and while that makes sense for driver safety, if you have a passenger who can set it instead, it would be nice to turn that option on and off.
Sometimes the tracking system is off and it shows you off the road but it adjusts and sometimes it doesn't choose the best route but it gives you 3 route options most times.... We are extremely happy with it at this point and will truly test it out on our trip to LA in May.

We've been waiting for the nav system to come out since we bought our car a year ago.

Basic questions: Did your car come with it? Is it generally available now? Is it available -- as my dealer promised -- as a retrofit?

Many thanks.

Dick

We purchased the 2002 with it, so I am not sure about the retrofiting situation. And I am not sure about getting one for the 2001, but the price was the same for getting for the Toyota as it was getting it for a Honda Acura and it works just as well. Any other questions I can help with let me know :)

Crystal

I was looking into this for a customer last year, he wanted to add NAV into a 2001. If you like to buy the needed parts new, it's roughly $5500 without installation ($4500 for NAV ECU, $500 for Antenna and $500 for CD). The harness is also different, you have to add wires. As you can see, it's not somthing the Dealer will offer as a quick add on like a cargo net.

Like you, our dealer was clueless and also said that the NAV system would be a later upgrade retrofit. It hasn't happened.

IF you order a new 2002, you can order it with the GPS/NAV system installed. It is installed at the factory (same now with DRL, and side air bags), and cannot be added on later as a port or dealer option (like a CD player or cargo net can be added). It's a US $1900 option.

For the 2001s, we're pretty much out of luck. Nothing has been announced about a retrofit kit, but there's so much labor and missing parts involved with a possible retrofit that it probably won't happen. 8( You're stuck with either maps, or going with a handheld- or laptop-based GPS system that's not integrated with your Prius.

However, there is a retrofit kit available for adding Cruise Control in your 2001 (or 2002, if you didn't order it from the factory that way)...

I suggest going to the group, where you can search. There is a lot of info there. I posted reviews of several different aspects as did others.

Burns
