Ah Insurance, what a wonderful topic.

It's an even better topic when you're trying to get insurance for a 2003 model year car in the middle of February 2002! Has anyone encountered frustration with getting their Matrix insured?

I tend to shop the Internet for everything, and I've noticed that every insurance quoting site, including the big names, just can't produce a quote for a 2003 model year car. I know it's because the manufacturers have to give the VIN "formula" to Polk (http://www.polk.com) and other such companies and then Polk has to send the VIN data to insurance companies so they can generate rates, but has anyone had any success getting insured without problems?

I called my insurance company at least three times before I was able to get the Matrix on my policy. Every single time I called I got the same story "How 'bout that? I try to put in the year and it dumps me right out of the system!" The first guy said "Well, when you actually get your car, we'll just insure you at the level of a Toyota Sequoia." Yup, that would pretty much cover it! A little overkill, but I'd be insured! In the end, the Matrix shows as 2002 on my policy! They had to manually type my ID cards to show a 2003.

Anyone else have trouble?

State Farm kicks ass :)

I dropped by their office, they had the car in their system, along with 3 other 2003 models.

Bumped my rate by +$20/mo., which still isn't all that bad :) (I think I pay like $100/mo)

They may be more expensive, but I've had all good experiences with State Farm :)

-adi

In some ways, State Farm does kick butt, but price is not always one of them. I was a solid State Farm customer for about 15-16 years. Then I happened to get on the Internet and looked for cheaper rates. I found them.

I know our situations are different and we could likely be comparing apples and oranges, but I'm paying $413 a year with $500 physical damage deductibles.

Hopefully I'll get better service if I have a claim 8-).

I'm sure that there are much cheaper rates out there, but I'm guessing there are two other factors here

I'm 25, you're 34. You probably get a discount based on your age/time you've been able to drive.

And I don't know Ohio at all, but I'm guessing insurance rates would be cheaper in that area than here in the Bay Area ;)

I'll switch eventually ;)

-adi

Exactly. Apples and Oranges. Plus, you probably do get better service than I do. The person who sold me the car asked, "Who is your agent?" At first I didn't know who he was talking about. Then when I told him I got it off the Internet, he didn't know what to do. "So you just call a 1-800 number?" And claims are the same way, I just talk to the first person to answer the phone.

You know I was with State Farm once? I was 18 at the time and after a couple of minor infractions they booted my butt out! Adi, your driving record must be impeccable! How long have you been with them?

Brantly

I've been with them since 98 (previously, I was insured under my parents' policy).

The funny thing is, as a teenager, I got 2 speeding tickets and had 2 major accidents. Then, I moved to California and got my own policy. They didn't penalize me for my previous infractions (they were all 3+ yrs old anyway).

In the last year, I've gotten caught running a red light in SF (damn photo-enforcement) and supposedly running a stop-sign (I'm fighting that one, the ticket is bs), but I went to traffic school for the former, and as mentioned, am contesting the latter.

So as far as my insurance knows or cares, I've got a pretty good record :)

The only thing they would have knocked me for previous to these, is when my friend borrowed my car and rear-ended a pickup truck. Ironically, based on the fact that I'd not had any problems up til then (3+ yrs of safe driving) the *FORGAVE* the incident, noting it, but not penalizing me for it. I was pretty psyched, to say the least ;)

One day, it will all catch up with me...I drive too fast and do the California Stop(tional) a lot of the time. Of course, having a brand new XRS 6spd doesn't help with the speeding issue ;)

-adi
