Hey to the group! Picked up a 92 reg cab 5speed, 22RE, with a short wheel base yesterday. Though I've owned many vehicles, this is my first real truck. Got it for $2350 with 88k miles. I don't know if the price is that great, but the guy wanted 2800 and it's in decent shape. I don't need a fancy truck, just something to haul stuff (sports gear, lawn equipment, wood, and the occasional appliance). The price was right for me, but it really is a bare bones vehicle (vinyl foor!) and I'd like to do a few retrofits before long.

First order of business, since this has no A/C (no compressor, no controller- nada), is to replace the fixed rear window with a slider. I was also going to put a decent stereo in, but realized that I'll need my ears to listen for shift points (a stick really *should* come with a tach). Anyone know if I can just grab a gauge cluster with tach from bone yard and run the extra wire or two to get a tach?? Also need a spare tire and wheel.

I know I just bought it, but here's the rest of my to-do list: door panels with map pockets, replace the single bulb overhead with the dual option shown in the owners manual, get a rear view mirror with day/night switch, under-hood light, glovebox light, pop a clock into the blank next to the heater controls, and cig lighter (need a power outlet). Maybe a carpet kit as well.

I'm also thinking of adding a bed light, but will need to drill holes after finding a decent fitting one. Any tips on pickup years (for bed light candidates) would be appreciated.

You could get an aftermarket tach and go that route, thats probably going to be easier than trying to find a dash with a tach. You could go down to any local autoparts store and get a Sunpro tach for pretty cheap. Your only other option would be, as you said, to find an SR5 gaugepack from a junkyard, but you would be lucky to find an SR5 gaugepack that is still good.
About the sliding rear window, I would forget about that. Ive got a sliding rear window in my F-150 and when you are driving you dont really get any breeze coming in through that window. One bad thing about driving with the sliding rear window open is that the force of the air swirling around the cab will sometimes blow stuff that sitting in the box inside the cab (for example: leaves, small chunks of wood, ect...).
I almost never open my sliding rear window for those reasons.
You can get the clock you want from www.performanceproducts.com but if it were me I would just buy an aftermarket radio that has a clock in with the rest of the radio's display.
The clock that that era of Toyota trucks had was REALLY oldschool. It was the type where you needed 2 pens to change the time. Its total 1980s technology.

Mde decent progress this weekend, courtesy of two local bone yards. Most of you have these things are probably take them for granted.
Replaced visors with those from a 93 4runner. Pass side now has a small mirror and driver's side has a checkbook and pen holder, plus three slots to hold insurance card, etc. Also took the passenger grab handle from the 4Runner as well as the center dual-light/mirror (with day/night lever(). Needed to make holes in headliner for lights and grab handle, but a careful check under the headliner revealed threaded female holes for all. Grabbed a clock from a wrecked 94 4Runner. The display is very readable. [Keep in mind, this is my first stickshift -- the clock saves me time/safety trying to check my cell's clock while driving]. Also grabbed the glovebox light and plunger switch from the 94 and installed. Picked up spare tire (wheel and tire like new), a jack kit in like new condition, and a lighted ashtray/cig lighter.

Installed a hood light. This was the only non-Toyota OEM part, but I highly recommend it. Here's a tip. Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth used a mercury switch hoodlight in their 92-94 vans. No need for a separate switch, just run one wire to battery. The mounting bolt grounds it. Raising the hood activates the light. I highly recommend this NICE addition!! btw, as long as the glass capsule is intact, there's no mercury issue.

Also picked up a Toyota stereo/cassette player. Pitched the crappy Sony that was in there. I made sure to take all connectors with all electronic parts.

Much better driving experience btw, all parts are color matches and look factory installed. Also picked up a SunPro tach (thanks Bakemono), but haven't installed it yet. Also grabbed the gauge pack from the 94 4Runner. The latter has additional gauges and I'd have to swap out the odomoeter. I'll have to research a bit first. Cause I think some of the necessay wires for the enhanced gauge pack might not be in place in my vehicle.

Total cost from boneyards, around $80. Another $32 for the Sunpro tach.
I'm still gonna do the sliding window (good for reaching into cooler for drink, etc).
