There's an object on the top left of the dash, looks like a small light that doesn't work. Has anyone else cars got this? What is it?

Right over at the passengers side - small round black thing abiout the size of an old 10p? It's the light sensor for the airconn, tells it how strong the sunlight is.

Phew! And to think, I was going to take it apart yesterday to see if there was a blown bulb. Thanks mate!

You wouldn't be the first person to poke at it wondering what it does. :)
