Im having some troubles with my truck, when I turn somewhat hard the wheel will make clunking noises. It looks like there is also a fluid leak of some sort around the CV boot. Is my CV axle in trouble? If I slapped a oversized throttle body and cold air intake in there will possibly give me better gas mileage or just more power? Thanks. Rob. 93 pickup v6 3.0 4x4 extcab

First off, any power mods done to the 3L V6 are a waste of money. The engine just does not have it in it. A good tune up will help more.
Check your CV joint boots. They tend to crack and rip open, flinging grease around. If it's left this way for too long, it get dirt inside, and then you are looking at all new half shafts. Toyota sells a kit with the boots, clamps and needed lube. I just replaced mine and it's a messy, but not hard job. One side had cracked open, the other was about to.
As for the clunking noises, it might be the steering stops. They have little plastic caps on them that do not last long. If you go over a bump with the wheel at full lock, it makes a scraping noise. You can replace the plastic caps or just live with the noise. It's not hurting anything.

Thanks for the info, ill have to look into that CV kit. Yup, guess i wont try to upgrade the engine. Works for me seems how i got to rebuild my XJ tranny so thats where the money will go. You know if it would be worth while to do those same engine upgrades in a 4.0 v6 XJ.

Would be worthless on a Jeep 4.0 v6, there isn't one. There are some gains that can be made with the Jeep 4.0 I6 however.
I6 means inline 6 right? what does the V mean then?

V = engine in a V shape with two rows of cylinders. It's a more compact design.
The best upgrade for the 3.0L engine is the 3.4L swap It's near bolt in and you get 50 more HP and better MPG. Next to that, just keep it in good running shape. Mine still does 80MPH down the freeway no problems.

That what I did to mine. In 2 months, it will turn 400k. Still on the road. It's an great learning experience doing all the work yourself. Cheap too. At this point, it's worth zero to anybody else so it's cheap to insure and little dents and dings don't matter.
