QUOTE
Jim Press, the first non-Japanese to join Toyota's ™ board, ruled out wage cuts for the company's U.S. auto workers and stressed the importance of the North American region as still holding growth potential.

QUOTE
Press dismissed a leaked memo, which discussed a need to cut labor costs, as " a conversation piece," adding that boosting efficiency is more effective in keeping costs down.

"Everybody is concerned about becoming more efficient, and making sure that the cost of labor doesn't get out of control" he told a small group of reporters at Toyota's Nagoya office."We don't plan to reduce wages."

He also denied a Wall Street Journal report earlier this week that said Toyota was so worried about overcapacity in North American production it was considering slowing down or even stopping building new plants there. He said there was no change to Toyota's plans to keep building cars where they are sold.

"Nobody in our company would ever come to a conclusion like what's stated in that article," Press said forcefully during an otherwise subdued interview.

I hope this is a real quote, not something taken out of context. It would be nice to have US Auto workers not get screwed for a change.

I'm in Aerospace and we're dealing with a lot of skilled cheap labour in asia right now.

Mark my words...in 3 years, we are going to see brand new state-of-the-art automobiles coming from China.

A brand new mid-size car will Retail for $10,000.

The labour base....she's a changin' folks. And I think we're going to suffer more here in North America. We'll all be workin' at McDonalds but our lower salaries should be able to afford these cheap cars. Cheap....but the quality will be quite acceptable.

If the cars dont hold up, I dont see them making much of an impact. Look at Kia and Hyundai. Their poor quality reputation has caught up with them and they really arent making the impact that everyone feared they would.
Also, the Chinese need to learn to come up with their own designs instead of copying everyone else and they need to learn how to make vehicles that have good safety ratings.
Also, as the standard of living in China goes up, the workers are going to demand higher pay and that will cause the price of the vehicles to go up.
I think that the expectation of a midsize car that retails for $10,000 is pretty unrealistic. I for one wont be buying a Chinese car.
