I bought a 2007 FJ Cruiser last weekend. I test drove one that was fully loaded - lifted, tons of extras. I didn't need *all* the bells/whistles on that one, but I did want the lift. The salesman explained that if I had the lift done through Toyota, it wouldn't void the warranty. So, we included that in the price of the car. I understood that I was getting the same lift as the one on their lot. The salesman stated that it was a 3.5 inch lift (lie number 1).

After I purchased the car, we began shopping for tires on our own (cheaper than going through the dealership). I went with LT 325/60R18/D2 119S Toyo open country A/T tires and 18x9 6-5.5 Am Eagle 178 wheels. From what we understood, this would be no problem with the lift, except...

When we brought the vehicle to Toyota, and they had their approved mechanic do the lift, I got a phone call saying the tires would not work, as they were too wide and would rub the control arm. At this time, it was mentioned that it was actually a 2.5 inch lift - Pro Comp doesn't even make a 3.5, it was 2.5 or 5.5. We then found out that the vehicle at the dealership actually had the 5.5 inch lift, so obviously the salesman either didn't know what he was talking about, or he deliberately lied to us.

My question - if I had a 5.5 inch lift, would those wheels and tires work? The dealership is saying no, but at this point I don't trust them at all. Thanks in advance :-)

5.5 inches is a LOT when you are speaking lift. I seriously think that I would go for a second opinion. You can call most any OTHER Toyota dealership and ask their mechanic. I don't see how these tires/rims are causing any issues. I mean this thing most likely had265/70 17s on it to begin with so I don't see that much difference. The lift should give you more clearance, however if the control is too close to the tire, this could be a MAJOR problem.

I just purchased an FJ as well and was flat out told that the dealer wouldn't and doesn't put the lift on the trucks and warranty issues are really subjective. This came from at least 3 different dealers in the Puget Sound area.
We had the FJ lifted (3 inch) from Les Schwab and from them we found the correct tire and wheel size based on thier recommendation (kinda hard to argue with the customer when the tires don't fit and they say it's your fault when they recommend them). They also warranty the lift and alignments so this worked out great for me. I would recommend taking your rig to the tire place and see what they say. If the dealer said it was a Pro-Comp lift, maybe take it to a Pro-Comp shop, they do tires as well.

Jut my $0.02

Mike

The tires are to wide thats why they rub on the upper control arm. Either you go with spacers up front our buy offset rims.

I run pro-comp x-terrain for the trail with 1" spacers up front and they work fine, slight rubbing on the body mount on real sharp turn nothing major.
