Lots of gray smoke coming out of the tail pipe. And some of it comes out of the joint between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
I thought it was a busted head gasket. I replaced the head gasket myself. I just put the engine back together. I still have the same problem. But this time the smoke is gray.
A little history: Before I replaced the head gasket, the smoke was white and it smelled like radiator coolant. I had a chemical test done on it. They said coolant was mixing with the oil. When I removed the head, there was coolant collected on the 4th cylinder. And the piston head was shiny. Conclusion: it was a bad gasket.
So I just finished replacing the head gasket. I turned the key, and lo, the truck started. But I still get smoke. The smoke no longer smells like coolant. It is not white, but gray. I now I have a lot of gray smoke coming out. The engine runs smoothly--and quitely. Acceleration is better than ever. Just a lot of gray smoke.
Any ideas? The truck has 220,000 miles.
