When I first got this van, the low oil light was functioning perfectly. It would come on when it needed oil and go out after I had topped it up.

6 months ago it started coming on and staying on all the time, even when the oil level was fine.

I called the local Toyota agents and asked about getting a replacement sensor after getting an opinion from a mechanic on another forum that the sensor was faulty - apparently a "common problem".

Toyota told me the list price for this sensor was $600 !! and they had never actually brought one into the country.

The light comes on exactly 4 minutes after starting the vehicle and driving around. This leads me to think that there is some kind of electronic module somewhere that interfaces the sensor with the lamp on the dash. Otherwise the lamp would come on and stay on immediately - not at the magic 4 minute mark.

I'm hoping someone may have a wiring diagram for any of the 1990 onwards LH series Hiaces that have this low oil lamp on the dash [it's orange and is a symbol of an oil can with a wavy line below it].

Once I can determine how the sensor drives the lamp, I can then either start hunting for the control module, or the circuit that drives the lamp to see if it is in fact a faulty sensor or something else causing the problem.

Hi Mate

The light you described above seems to be the the diesel sediment filter warning light.Go back to your mechanic and ask him to locate the sediment filter and drain water from it.The light should go off.Wiah you good luck. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sunce.gif)

Nope, it's definitely not the fuel filter (diesel sediment) lamp.

It's a picture of an oil can with a wavy line below it - designates LOW OIL.

Dear freind:

To help you with the problem that you have, the lamp works on a electrical continuity system. please check if you disconect the sensor socket if it will still light on ,sensor is faulty, you can determine if it is faulty when you turn on the engine and it is no longer giving of light when the cable is not connected the sensor need repair or replacement, in the side of the crankcase there is an oil level sensor terminal the sensor is inside the crank case soaked in oil and there is this float which you might be able to clean up or check it out if it is no longer floating means it is too much saturated in oil and needs cleaning hence the float can not do its job to trigger the magnetic switch off when the float always remain in the bottom the magnetic switch is always on the close position. regards from francis buenafe

Thanks Francis - when I get a chance I might drain the oil and pull the sensor out.
