Can someone tell me what exactly the Mark Levinson audio system is composed of. I mean, does it have a bass box in the trunk or under the seats and an amp. I heard it's great but I'm not sure what that means, I mean the Infiniti's audio system is good too, it's clear and easy to hear. Is the lexus like that or does it have bass too?

I think it should has no less than 7 speakers + 1 bass + power amp since the 97' model already has them and now is an upgrade

The layout of the 97' model is
4 speakers on 4 doors
1 in the middle above the console
2 beside the window mirror (high pitch)
1 bass in the boot (no bass box)

I just joined the GS club today. I bought a 1999 GS 400 and have been told that the Mark Levinson system was designed for Lexus since the interior cab noise is so low (better than the majority of cars out there). Mark Levinson makes home systems with a price range of 100K and up. They decided to enter the car market but wanted to ensure the cars they targeted would be quiet enough to appreciate the sound quality.

This is my first Lexus and GS so I can't really compare my Levinson to the std. stereo or the Nakamichi. I can tell you there are 10 speakers. The subwoofer is in the center of the rear deck. There is a center speaker in the dash. One spkr in each door, 2 more in the rear deck and tweeters in the front doors near the hinges. The stereo is controlled via the touchscreen of the navigation system. The sound is very accurate. There is emough power that I haven't been able to max out the volume. My only criticisms are: 1)the audio conrols are limited to) base, midrange and treble and are accessible via the touchscreen only after pressing the audio button on the bezel and then pressing the sound button on the screen.
2)the in-dash CD player is represented on the touchscreen as 6 CD's numbered 1-6. You can pick your CD and change tracks on the bezel around the touchscreen or from the steering wheel. The drawback is the system can't tell you the name of CD or track so you have to play it to find out what you loaded into the cassette. You can do scan, random play, ff, and reverse off the CD touchscreen. There are also separtate screens that come up for tape, AM, FM1, FM2, and FMtype.
