I used to put my 88 Turbo 2.2 liter Dodge Shadow
up against those Z-24's on the highway quite often.
They were spry little cars, but my Shadow would out
power and out manuver them. My 4 cyl shadow made 148
hp, and the 90 2.8's are rated by Edmunds as 140
hp.

I raced anything that would go up against me in the
late 80's early 90's and that Shadow was seldom beat.
(Two times to be exact- I picked my battles pretty
carefully, but that Grand national Buick that blew me away
even surprised me with how fast it was) I litteraly
used to wave bye bye to those 2.8 liter Chev engined
Camaros, before I downshifted, got into the turbo and blew
them off.

The Z-24's you're mentioning,
especially the 2.8 jobs were quick and would run with me
pretty well. But, true story, I got up behind one one
night on the highway and topped out as fast as our cars
would go, -fastest I'v eever driven in my life- I was
still able to pull around him and go away. That class
of car is not heavy, but not especially powerful,
and that's where it gets it's speed.

The 2.2
liter Chryslers (based on the Mitsubishi engines)
through those years- mostly put into the Shadows and the
Omni GLH's- have a lot of zip and are still pretty
impressive to drive today, especially if you tweak the
timing just a little. But, like the Cavalier, these
things are really just souped up economy cars, and they
suffer for what they are when you're talking about top
speed stuff.

That said, my 2.0 liter (not the
2.5 that got shipped to the USA) Twin Turbo MkII is
way more powerful than my shadow ever was, especially
when the turbos kick in. It IS heavier, I can feel
that for sure, and longer, not as small and spry to
slam around in traffic but my foot and the seat of my
pants says it has WAY more balls at the upper limit.
Out on the open highway in a top speed contest, I'm
pretty sure the Supra would be way more settled and go a
LOT faster.

The truth is, however, I'm not
sure which I'd rather be driving against the other in
a typical "real world" highway race. (relatively
short distance- maybe two or three miles- usually first
person to pull signifigantly away in the short haul
backs off the gas as a winner) My Supra's an automatic
trans job, and I have a hunch if I hit the shifts right
in the Shadow, I'd surprise a Supra driver. It's
possible, if the Cavalier driver caught the supra driver
off guard, he could take him in the short run. If
traffic and manuvering was any kind of factor, I'd give
the nod to the econmy GT car.
