Long story made short. My insurance company is trying to total my 92 4Runner (great Condition except 2 rust holes in back doors, loaded, leather) quoting that the truck is worth 2000USD. I think more like 5000. In order to get them some estimates of prices, I did a quick search of autotrader.com (avg. 4500) and kelly blue book (3000). My question is, what other model years share same front fenders, hood, bumper, and grill... (ouch, bit of a bender...) I want to expand their range of years if they are searching for parts. Jay

This site http://tinyurl.com/2ntouc has good specs for the different models. The page you will get is for 1996-2002 models, but if you experiment a bit with the links you can get specs for earlier model years. Rod

Funny story. I am going through the exact same thing with my 92 4runner. They wanted to write mine off as well but I have been fighting pretty hard to get it fixed. I had to have an appraiser come out to the house and value it and now I am trying to find a small shop to take it fir a contract price. The insurance company is afraid of hidden damages. The appraiser thinks I have a real good chance if I can leave it with them for about a week because then they have enough time to find some used parts and bring the price down a bit. I am in canada as well which changes things slightly. The other option is to have your insurance company pay you out the damages as high as they will and you cover the rest out of pocket. I am considering this as well because it is probably going to be cheaper in the long run than buying a new 4runner. Also I just dropped 2 grand on 4 new BFG AT tires and a new performance clutch and I will likely lose that money totally if they write it off. I'll keep you updated as the saga continues. Best of luck.CHeers,J

Remember that if the Insurance Company totals the vehicle you can buy it back from them and use the balance of the payoff to have it fixed. I did this with a Honda Van and it worked out great. Not saying it's the right deal for you guys, but it's an option to consider. The price I paid for the salvage van was simply the average amount that the salvage yards were willing to pay to buy it from the Ins co. Good Luck, Andy

Follow on to this story... I finally convinced them to fix my 4Runner by getting them to use the mileage instead of the kilometer reading as miles... (yes, they are that dumb) and looking for parts a little more aggressively. So, all is good. Thanks, Andy and Rod, for your responses. Jay
