I know that moon roofs are popular these days. We thought we were going to get one when we bought our Camry and then changed our minds thanks to a car salesman.

We had asked him about whether or not moon roofs ever leak. He said no. Later when he opened the trunk to allow us to see how large it was, there was a hose like contraption inside which he explained was for draining the moon roof in case it got water in it.

I'm wondering if the moon roofs really do leak after a period of time. It can rain really hard around here.

I've heard the aftermarket moon roofs leak worse. Factory ones don't quite as much, but I do hear they can, which would make me kind of skeptical about them.

what are other drawbacks of having a moon roof? my sister just bought her CRV and is about to install (i think) a moon roof on it. i'd like to know if there are other drawbacks besides the possible leaks.

My first car in the States was a Dodge Omni. It had a sunroof. I loved it... until winter came, and the thing started leaking! It was a pain! So, after that, when I bought my Rav4, I didn´t ask for sunroof because I didn´t want to go through that ever again! I regret not having it, but I guess the next time around I´ll ask for it again. I think when they are brand new models, the sunroof is a lot better. On older models maybe things might get bad after a while...

Yes, yes, yes, alot of moon roofs leak but may not happen until you have invested years in the car. In all honesty, they are not that costly to repair.

I've had a moon roof leak too, but it was an older car. If the repairs really aren't too costly, I'd get one.

I can't judge every car or every moonroof. I can tell you about the one I have in my Mitsubishi Eclipse. In MY Eclipse, a 1997 with over 150,000 miles on it and living in a driveway in Southern Illinois (including during HEAVY rainstorms). It has never leaked.

Not once in 10 years have I ever had an issue with it.

If I trade it in on a new Eclipse, I'll get another moonroof.

I've had four cars in a row with moonroofs (all factory installed) and never have had a leak ...well, unless I left it open during a rain lol.

Yeah I've about that. My dad once considered putting one in his CRV too, but a friend told him to think twice because it really leaks.

So are we just talking about aftermarket moon roofs? I've seen really old cars with factory ones that don't leak so I haven't even considered it a problem.

My brother had a celica back in the 1970's with a sunroof (manual is sunroof.....automatic is a moonroof) and I told him about this topic and he said his never leaked but he knew several people who had them installed later and they always leaked!

Moral of the story: Buy it that way or forget it.

Heh, I see most people around here call them moonroofs too...where I live, the preferred nomenclature seems to be sunroof, but I stubbornly stick to my moonroof ways.

My mother's Saab had a moonroof, never had a problem with leaks; it came with the car though. I suppose the lesson from this thread is if you're going to put in a moonroof after the fact, better have it professionally done. Or at least take your time and do it right.

I think you're right. But it's sort of like sky lights in houses ...I've never seen many installed later than didn't leak. In fact, I've got to get het a pan for one right now because it's pouring!
