MPG would also increase were there not other drivers on the road. Since I've had the Prius, the car had "educated" me in terms of encouraging slow acceleration and decceleration-however these are not driving characteristics openly appaluded by other drivers, who don't give a rat's patootie that you're trying to be kind to the environment. Without the "peer pressure" factor my mileage for the same 28 mile trip is 62mpg (at night) as opposed to 52 mpg in the angst ridden daytime.

Since I've had the Prius it has made me painfully aware of the insane pace of urban life and driving.

>>And on that line, does anyone know what Prius means in Latin? I think it is something like "to go beyond".<<

This was dealt with in a previous thread; unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to search the message archive, so I'll repeat the substance.

Prius is the comparative (and adverbial) form of the adjective "prior", which makes it mean something like "even earlier". It is not a verb and doesn't mean "to go before", though it could mean "going before". The plural is priores.

My Prius has gotten the best MPG when I leave home "prius" (defined as "even earlier")to allow more time to arrive. I also drive it in the manner of the Latin verb consequor. It translates roughly as "to catch up to."

My route to work has a stretch of traffic lights that have little in the way of sequential patten. I just let the jack-rabbits "go before" me and "catch up" to them at the next red light. This way, I can accelerate at a more reasonable pace and coast up to the drivers who are stopped ahead of me waiting for the light to change. ;)
