i have a 89 coroolla sedan...manual tranny.....
i knew the axles were going out,,,,but now it is really raising hell,,,wont really drive right,,,clciks and pops when driving straight down the street,,,i smell something like break pad,,probably clutch disc,,,

CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO ASSESS if its in addtion to needing new axles, how do i check if i need a new clutch,,,the pedal feels fine...or maybe the throw out bearing,,,,well anyway,,,i just wanna know if i should bother fixin it,,,i am happy with what i've gotten out of her and dont mind putting her down,,she has over 170k

Have you checked the fluids? I was having similiar problems with an older Eclipse and it turned out all I needed were clutch, brake and power steering fluids.
