Hi All,
I am sorry if I sound a little dumb about this subject, but I have a huge problem. My son lives in Portland Oregon. He owns a lemon of a 1991 Toyota 4x4 pickup which has not started for the past 2 months. He took it Monday to be diagnosed and they told him it was the fuel pump. So after paying $400 for the new fuel pump and the labor, the truck still would not start. So 2 more days of diagnosing and now they are telling him it is the "ECU". Problem is, he can't find a used one anywhere around the Portland area. Anyone know of one around the El Paso, Texas or Las Cruces NM area? Also, how hard is this part to install? Will a mechanic have to do it or is it simple for my son to do. He does quite a bit of little work on the truck.... thanks for ANY help at all!!! Or any other suggestions!! Bought this lemon 2 years ago for $2000 and have invested more than $3000 in repairs thus far!! UGH! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

ECU is Engine Control Unit, aka ECM (Module). The computer that runs the engine.
If you find one you can replace it yourself, it's a plug-in.

Have you tried a scrap yard, they have a computer network to locate one if they don't have one.
You can also locate used parts online yourself. Try GOOGLE to find those sites.

I'd find another dealer, they sound incompetent (like most of them, unfortunately).

The ECU is dead simple to replace. It's right behind the passenger side kick panel.

It sounds like whoever is working on the truck does not know what they are doing? Is the check engine light on? Any error codes? On a 91, all you need to do is jump two pins on the diag port and the check engine light will blink. Then look up the error code in the service manual.

Checking for a bad fuel pump is easy.

1) Turn key on
2) Remove the air filter and stick your hand inside and push the air flow sensor.
3) You should hear the fuel pump turn on in the tank and a hissing sound near the fuel rail.
4) Wait about 15 minutes, then crack the fuel feed to the cold start injector. It's at the top of the engine and easy to get at.
5) If fuel spray out, the fuel pump is good. If it just drips or nothing comes out, then you need a new pump or fuel filter.
