I took delivery of my 2002 Prius on the 9th of this month. To break in the drive train as per Toyota's recommendation, I spent a couple of weekends cruising up and down the coast on PCH, keeping the car under 62 mph. Once I racked up 600 miles, I let 'er rip and had the car up to 80 mph. All the while, the handling was stable and the car drove smooth as silk.

Up to now, I had paid no attention to the tire pressure. Yesterday, I did the first routine check, and the tires measured about 45 psi all around, meaning that the dealer had filled them with at least that much pressure. I was surprised at the high pressure, but since the car handled fine for all this time, I decided to leave it go for now. Any thoughts or comments on this?

Mark

Hi Mark
If you're satisfied with the comfort level at 45 PSI, that should work ok for you. Keep an eye on the tread and if you notice excess wear in the center treads you might want to bring it back down to 42 front, 40 rear.

It's a little surprising that a dealer filled them that high, but maybe they're learning?

Another possibility is that they filled them on a cold day and you measured on a hot day. That could add 3-5 psi. (You didn't measure them just after driving on them did you?)

Robert Snyder
NJ-PIKACHU

Nope. I measured them before doing any driving that day.

Mark

After 8500 miles, I've found that any tire pressure above 40psi is an extremely harsh ride on the Prius. My favorite pressures for all around ride comfort, handling and tire wear: F=37, R=35. (However, I must admit, it rides and glides like a baby Lexus with about 30 in em! But for safety sake, I wouldn't recommend it.)

-Michael
CA "01 Prius"
