I just received the Pruis Electrical manual and
the repair manual. The Electrical manual claims the
following:<br><br>N2:Navigation ECU:90980-11973<br>N3:Navigation
ECU:90980-11923<br><br>These part numbers are not close to those that you
received... ...happiness?!?!?<br><br>The sadness part is I
used the Electrical Manual and discovered that indeed
atleast my 2001 Prius does NOT have the GPS wiring from
the center console to the Nav ECU's. :-(<br><br>Also
discovered that the wiring for the side airbags is not there
as well.<br><br>Attempted to find the connectors for
the Nav ECU's within the center console but the
effort seemed useless until there was a ray of hope that
the Prius NAV ECU's are availiable and have the US
DVD's...<br><br>...maybe you could attempt to find the price of the above
part numbers... ...I guess I could just as well...
;-)<br><br>

No question...way out of line. DeLorme sells a CD
and GPS antenna with all the major and minor roads in
the US for $180. Add a CPU/CD ROM reader for say
$1000 and as you say the screen already exists and you
are finished.<br><br>Does anyone know of what they
are getting in Japan for this option?<br><br>Pete

I was thinking that perhaps Toyota would go with
the Alpine system, like the one Honda/Acura uses. The
unit is DVD based and supposedly one of the best out
there. It would be a $2000.00 option and should work
with the touch screen in the Prius with some
electrical engineering tweeking.<br>But I doubt that a good,
standardized GPS navigation system could be bought for
$1000.00 or less.<br><br>(BTW: the Alpine system is nice,
it is an option that I bought with my car)

Check out the Garmin StreetPilot GPS ColorMap
at<br><br><a href=http://www.garmin.com/products/colorMap/
target=new>http://www.garmin.com/products/colorMap/</a><br><br>This can easily
be moved from vehicle to vehicle and
sells at some web distributors for around $550. Using a
serial cable and a PC, you can download the maps of
interest from a CD-ROM to a RAM cartridge in the GPS unit
before leaving on a trip. Some distributors are selling
a kit which includes the GPS unit, North America
CD-ROM, cable and 32 MB RAM cartridge for $799.95. Here's
one as an
example:<br><br><a href=http://www.gpsnow.com/gmspcm.htm

><a href=http://www.gpsnow.com/gmspcm.htm<
target=new>http://www.gpsnow.com/gmspcm.htm<</a><br>While
I agree that portable units are readily available
for much less, the Alpine GPS/gyro system can be
integrated with the car.<br>In the case of the Prius, I am
thinking that it could (with EE modification) be connected
to the Prius onboard display. Also note that the
Alpine system gives audible instructions on when to turn
("turn right in half a mile")<br><br>But again, you are
right about price. It becomes a trade-off between
portability versus integration along with the asthetics of
each compared to price.<br><br>Robert

system
is also GPS/gyro. The New Car Features book shows
that in addition to GPS info, the nav CPU receives
wheel speed and the output of a "yaw sensor" (i.e. a
kind of quartz gyro).<br><br>Bob F

the wheel speed, instead does the calculation via
GP/time (which equates to speed)<br>Now, I was thinking
that Prius would be using the Alpine system because I
believe I read that their system would be DVD based, and
the only system that is DVD based (that I know of) is
the Alpine system -- the DVD based system has many US
cities and all US highways.

>Mike Kaiser had mentioned on the eGoups
mailing list that the GPS system may be made by Denso.
See the following
link<br><br><a href=http://www.denso-int.com/proto/sae2000/navigate.html<
target=new>http://www.denso-int.com/proto/sae2000/navigate.html<</a><br><br>T\
hanks for this information!<br>This is great
stuff.<br>Because it is a different company, most likely it is a
different product.<br>In this case, I would like to see
this GPS unit, because it looks like a fun
toy!<br><br>:-)

Since Alex mentioned my post over at e-goups
about the Nav system I'll add it here for those who
don't monitor both lists.<br><br>I'd also add to this
discussion that I think the Prius Nav System is made by
DENSO becasue the Navigation Quick Reference Guide
posted over on e-groups by Paul Rodgers has a DENSO and
Toyota part number on the last page. Also the DENSO unit
in the Lexus (a Toyota product) has a LCD display
that looks similar to the Prius Display. Additionally
the DENSO unit uses the Toyota Mapmaster for basic
map data.<br><br>I'm sure that IF the part for a
Prius Nav System are available they WILL be two or
three times the cost of the factory installed option.
Look at Alex's work on CC. A $250 facoty option ended
up costing over $750. But I still enjoy discussing
this topic. <br><br>- - Mike

><br>DENSO makes the Navigation system for
Lexus here in USA -- check this
site<br><a href=http://www.denso-int.com/proto/sae2000/navigate.html
target=new>http://www.denso-int.com/proto/sae2000/navigate.html</a>
<<br><br>This system is looking really
cool!<br>It has voice recognition, if I read it
correctly.<br>Anyone going to guess what it is going to cost?

I went on the Lexus site an when thru the WWW
process to build my own Lexus LX470...<br><br>First off
the BASE MSRP is $61,405! Ouch! That is about 3
Prius's!<br><br>The Navigation System option is about $3000. It is
bundled in with the $1280 audio system, electrochromic
rear view mirror, 6-disk CD
player.<br><br>

OPS! "an when" was supose to be "and went"...
...I think bed time is approaching...
;-)<br><br>Anyway...<br><br>It seems to me that if we could somehow "lie" to the
Pruis that the GPS option is installed, we should be
able to attach a portable PC in place of the GPS unit
via what it seems is the VGA connection. If we knew
what the 2-wire serial bus was, RS-232, CAN, duh?, we
may be able to accomplish this.<br><br>I say the
above because I do not see a jumper of any sorts that
indicates the presents of the GPS unit.<br><br>Anybody
know? Does ee_of_ee want to go
here?<br><br>

Although I refer to myself on this group as ee_of_ee, it is related to my job
title, not my degree. I'm not an electrical engineer.<br><br>Sorry, no help.
