We are moving to Costa Rica, to a very rural area, and have an interest in purchasing a Landcruiser to take along. We've been told that for serious stuff like we're getting into, we should look at early 1980's models. New vehicles, less than 5 years old or so, are cost prohibitive because of the import duties assessed by the government. Toyota is the vehicle of preference there, due to parts availability and knowledge of local mechanics. Diesels are very widely used, and most of what we see there are manual transmissions. We don't want to buy something that is already there, because the roads are so terrible that anything used there for very long gets badly worn out. Transportation costs are not too stiff to get one into the country.

Suggestions on web resources for information, and vehicles available, would be quite welcome and helpful.

How 'bout some advice from experts in the older stuff, that was built for serious 4WD work, before the Yuppies made SUV's a road vehicle?

Check out http://www.jtoutfitters.com/ for trucks for sale, as well as good cheap parts.

Look into http://www.tlca.org/ for the Land Cruiser Association. They're bound to have good links.

You can buy completely rebuilt trucks from http://www.coolcruisers.com/ - but they might be pricey just because they're restores.

The links are out there (and some in the 'links' section in this club) for parts & trucks.
