I live in the city and I need a car to get me around where I live. I'm thinking about a prius, but part of me is leaning towards a smart car. I've been in them and they don't feel as tiny as they look, and I would LOVE the parking advantage the smart car gives you. However, I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable on the highway (I do need to go longer distances sometimes.). Anyone else made this comparison before? I'd be interested to hear what you think.

If all other cars on the road were the same size, no problem with a tiny car, but in this country, get hit and you might lose your life (getting hit from behind by a heavy vehicle can ping-pong the light vehicle into the car in front).

Do the math homework on an Excel spreedsheet at how long it would take to recoup the cost of buying a Prius at today's gas price and bump it up to $8/gal. The Prius. I feel is a luxury vehicle, mid-sized don't compare to the cost of a Corolla. There is a Camry Hybrid but compare to gasoline car in the same purchase range.

I've owned my 2007 Prius one year now. Drive normal (waste gas) and I get 48 mpg, drive with technique gives me 55 mpg around town. You learn how to drive the Prius for optimum mileage. If I drove at 45 mph no stopping, it is possible to get 99.9 mpg (I can't take it for too long, means I'm the only one on the road or else the truck will run over me). I'm thoroughly happy with my Prius, not a problem the whole year. Still hurts to pay $4.39 a gallon in Califonia no matter how many miles/gal I can achieve.
