We have a Hiace 1992 SCL with the 3L, auto and love it.

A few strange things I cant figure out.

1) How / when are the lights on the inside of the front doors come on is there a switch somewhere? They do not light up at all right now with the doors open and bulbs seem OK.

2) The van locks all doors after 20 kms/hr. Say we stop, passenger wants to get out - but cant unless manually flip the lock lever to "unlock". I would think it would be like the drivers door when even if locked, if you pull on the lever it would open. ?

3) Does only one of the big fluorescant lights in the back light up when opening the sliding door (the drivers side) - or can you make both light up (on each side)? The one on passenger side only says on/off - no "door". ?

4) Side mirrors retract - but dont flip back open. ?

I'm pretty sure most of not all of these are simple fixes, but advice from you knowledgable HIACE owners would be appreciated! I gave the manual it came with (in Japanese) to my buddy to start translating...

Read on another forum about the locks.

The problem here is that all the issues you mentioned are hard ones!

1. The warning lamps on the inside of the front doors generally come on when you open the doors. Try switching your main lamps to the park position, then open the doors. They may be wired to only show when it's dark (ie when your main lights are on).
Otherwise, I'd suggest you have a fuse out. Does the interior light (under the rear vision mirror) come on when you open the doors?

2. Auto lock of all doors above 20 km/hr is a safety feature. Rear doors require manual unlocking before they will open. There is often a "remote release" switch somewhere that will unlock the back doors.

3. I don't know anything about the fluorescent lights. Are they stock or have they been added after manufacture?

4. It is possible that the side mirrors only retract, and that opening them is a manual operation. Either that, or the control module that drives the mirrors is faulty.

Thanks for that. I know it's fiddly stuff that takes a bit of time to track down. I have been fooling around with some of the connectors behind the front bumper while I have all the headlights/grill out. Looks like I'm getting a bit o progress with the door lights coming on and the front dome light.

The flouros look stock - they are above the middle seat on each side.
