Good information, but you forgot one thing. Trade in value. A Yaris after 5 years will only bring you 8,000 in trade in where the Prius will double that sense there are no used ones out there, yet. I payed about 25,000 for a number 5 option 2008 model.

Did you want one for the fuel economy or for other reasons? I stopped calculating MPG's. Instead I assume a vehicle will be driven for 100K miles and calculate numbers based on that. Dollars Per Mile DPM is better for me. For instance...the out the door price on a 07 Non touring, package #3 at the local dealership is $28,600 without negotiating. If you figure the car gets an average of 50 MPG and you divide that into 100k miles you get 2000 Gallons of gas. 2000 gal right now at $3/gal equals $6000 over 100k driven(this may fluctuate with time and I understand that). These numbers are a little less conservative than the average real world gas milage posted at gasaroo of about 48MPG. $28,600 can be reduced to about $27,000 with negotiation or much better if you are as destructive as I am at dealers(my little brother is a car salesman so I know a little bit about it.) $27,000 plus the $6000 equals $33,000 33,000 divided by 100,000 miles equals $0.33/mile. Maint and insurance will be left out for now. I want you to see what I am getting at. A toyota yaris which is a compact vs. a midsize prius has a sticker price of $15K. It gets 40MPG. that is 2500 gallons over 100K miles. That makes a total fuel bill of $7500 over the 100K miles driven again assuming $3/gal and yes the price will still fluctuate. Negotiations equal at least $14K for car and add $7500...that equals $21,500 divided by 100K miles that makes it $0.215/mile. Figure that I got my 05 Prius as a salvage rebuild for $14K and that puts me near the price of the Yaris. Assume I will get 8K for my nissan and the price of my 05 Prius goes to 6K. $6k for the car plus $6K for gas and that is $12K divided by 100K miles that is $0.12/mile to drive:) :) :) That equals one very happy camper here. I hope the number crunching gets your mind working in the right direction. I am happy for anyone that can get a low cost per mile but I do not think that the brand new vehicle is the way to go for hybrid owners. I am not slamming new hybrid owners....Just expressing my math calculations. Are there any Generation III(year 2004 and above) Prius owners that have more than 100K on thier cars....If so, what is the condition of your battery??? Just curious what the average life for a gen III prius batt is. I think the cost of replacement is like $3k. This is meant to be informative so the logical people will understand what I am saying.
