Well, I've had my Prius for a day now and I've
put 95 miles on it with an MPG average of
67.

SIXTY-SEVEN you say? I would like to attribute it to my
skillful driving, but it looks more like the MPG
calculator isn't getting the fuel flow signal all the time.
My dealer called me today asking if I had noticed
anything odd. I mentioned the overly high mileage reading
and he said that was a symptom they'd noticed on
Prius in which Port Newark had installed the CD player.
His mechanic discovered that sometimes they got some
wiring backward when replacing a patch cord with the CD
player (or something like that). The other symptom they
noticed was that the tape player didn't always work. When
I got home, I tried a tape for a short drive and it
seemed fine.

Guess I'll get to see the inside of
the service dept. sooner than I expected. (Actually,
the dealer already introduced me to the receptionist
and head mechanic, but that was more of a social
call.)

So if your Prius came through Port Newark, had the
CD installed (single) and you have trouble with the
tape deck or MPG calculator, this might be the
problem.

Details for the detail obsessed:

The MPG
calculator problem seems to be intermittent. It will go a
while with what look like reasonable readings, then
lock at 100 MPG for a while no matter how much power
I'm requesting, until I push the accelerator almost
to the floor, then it will jump down to the 16-20
MPG range until I let off it again.

I'm not
sure what the tape player failure is like since I
didn't experience it (yet).

Robert Snyder
