Hello all,

I am thinking of changing my own engine oil. I was wondering how many QTs do I need to pull in to the engine? Please advise. Thank you all in advance.

hybrid8 (SF) CA
Still alive and driving (14,500 miles)

Thank you for the reply. Why do I want to do it myself you ask. The last time I took my car in for service. It took two days for an simple oil change. I took my Prius in around 7:30 AM. I got a call around 10 AM that the master tech at that dealer of mine was sick that day. so I had come back to the dealer to rent a car the same day for the time my Prius is being service. With all they say and done. It took two days for an oil change. I rather change it my self because I can do it any time I want. And for your sarcastic remarks. Yes I do own two Prius Owner's Manuals and yes I do recycle the used motor oil. Thank you again for your reply.

hybrid8 (SF) CA

Another good reason to do it yourself: It's the only way to know for sure what gets put in there! The manual calls for 5W30 oil but according to several folks their dealer used routine, bulk 10W30. I'm hopeful that if we keep harping about this eventually the word will get through to the dealers.

Sam

You are right - doing it yourself is the only way to make it sure that you put the right oil.
Ignorant idiots at TOYOTA will tell you that of course they've put the right oil - but we have no way of checking it.

Do-it-yerselfer's beware: It appears you need to replace the gasket (crush washer?) of the oil drain plug whenever you change the oil. Honda Insight owners were particularly concerned about this. Due to the free oil changes, Prius owners haven't posted much about oil change procedures. Anyone with volume 2 of the repair manual feel like verifying my interpretation of item 3.(a) on pg LU-3?

Anyway, the original capacity question from the original do-it-yerselfer was a bit disconcerting since it indicates a lack of experience with do-it-yerselfing. But perhaps the poster left their owner's manual at home and was planning on heading to the store directly. You will need 3.9 quarts if replacing the oil filter and 3.6 if not. So buy 4 quarts of 5W30. Be careful not to overfill when adding that last quart. Also, if you replace the oil filter, a do-it-yerselfer should know to run the engine a minute or so to let the filter fill-up, then recheck the oil level (on a level surface, after sitting with engine off for a few minutes).

And be sure to check the oil again frequently over the next few days to make sure you didn't create a leak.

Robert Snyder
NJ-PIKACHU

Rather than leaving your Prius in the hands of "idiots" why don't you find a dealer you can count on. There are lots around. Some day you will probably need more than an oil change. Also, the "idiots" probably find the feeling mutual.
