OK... Got a "Vehicle Reserved" E-Mail today except.....
On 8/3 I completed the Web form specifying "Any Available Color" in order to get the first available Prius. No cruise, DRL, side bags? No problem: made plans with dealer to trade-in for late 2002 or 2003 model.
On 8/3 received P.R.# 4111405372
On 8/7 the dealer FINALLY did their part!
Today, 8/8 I get E-Mail "Vehicle Reserved"... "Silver Strata Metallic 2001 Prius"...

Funny??? How can they assign a color for "any AVAILABLE color" when it isn't even on the boat?

The topper? "You can expect to receive your vehicle in November to mid-December".
I DON'T think so - I'll be at my friendly, deliver on time, Ford dealer by December.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Did the dealer screw up and assign a color? I SURE wouldn't have picked "scratch me" silver. Wonder what "dealer truths" will surface tomorrow when I put the manager against the wall?

A shame... My "first" (and last?) Toyota?
Bill Powell
(Currently glad he hadn't yet ordered custom license plates....)

I think if you got your car assigned, it's either on the boat or in the marshalling yard...

Whmp,
Did you walk into a dealer and place your order or did you place it electronically through the Toyota website?
On 7/31 a notice was placed on the purchase request site at toyota.com advising customers that demand has exceeded initial supply and that orders placed as of 8/1 would likely be delivered in November to early December.
This is the best system that we currently have to meet market demand with the current production capacity.

we'll look to have some one contact you directly tomorrow. PM

The order for U.S. monthly production was placed 3 months prior - your request is matched to incoming production by color and geography(your dealer's Prius comes via one of five ports of entry)These order qtys by location and color are locked and accurate. So with 100%confidence we can place a unit quantity in reserved status based on this count. An internal order would contain all of a specific color and location quantity amount - 1 of 30 silvers going to the SF region. When the units are actually produced and placed on a vessel ar individual
VINs attached.

Not sure where your problem lies or what you expected. I received my order confirmation on 7/7 and expected delivery was September-October at that time. On this limited-production vehicle, that is just how long it is taking (there are a few of us in line ahead of you). Perhaps your dealer wasn't clear about this with you...

Thanks Jason,
Boy - I DO hope and wish you are right but I have a sinking feeling that my Prius is still a hot puddle of steel somewhere in Japan.
Time will tell: a depreciating trade-in and time marching on will force an "alternate plan B" in another 7500 miles.
Thanks again,
Bill

Thanks PriusMan,
I placed a Web order after talked extensively with a local dealer with a sterling reputation and had shown interest in selling a Prius.
The Web site had NOTHING about any delays - at least on the order pages...
Then I visited the dealer, dropped a deposit and a couple of days later the order was effective.
The dealer was not specific, only saying that: "The color of silver simply fills the first available status" which tells me nothing. Does silver just happen to be the color of the next available Port Newark car or did the dealer take it upon themselves to pick silver and put me at the end of the line? Six to eight weeks is a while to wait but December??
I'm facing a situation where every week I drive my trade-in reduces it's value while the Prius stays at $20K, or more: the dealer wrote the order as "At Sticker Price". At some point in time, I'm going to have to cancel the Prius order simply because it becomes economically unpractical. So I'm afraid I'm just unable and unwilling to wait till December.
All things considered: I'd really rather have a Prius and would part with an extra grand to be in one before my car hits 90K and becomes "high mileage" and next to worthless.
Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Paul,
Oh - plenty of people were sure about 6 to 8 weeks. I'm looking at decreasing trade-in value and December delivery! By then my trade-in will be "high mileage" and the $23K for the Prius has to come from somewhere!
I have perhaps 12 Toyota dealers within 50 miles, including the infamous US Rte 22 dealers. Maybe I'll get lucky and see a Prius on one of their lots before then.
I'd REALLY rather have a Prius but it's beginning to look like it will just cost too much to wait.
Thanks,
Bill
