Has anybody ran out of gas in their Prius?
I did, the Prius is very difficult
to restart if you do.
Has anybody had problems with their fuel gage sensors?

I ran out of gas once while going 65 mph on the
Freeway during rush hour.I had forgotten that the low
fuel warning had gone off on the way IN to work and
also to fuel up before going home.

The warning
triangle symbol came on the display and the car slowed
down. I was able to get to the next exit. The car shut
down at the stoplight at the end of the exit but
restarted and could be driven for another mile to a gas
station in Electric only mode.

With a re-filled
tank there were no problems with restart or fuel level
indicators.

Terry

I had auto club put 2 gallons in and it still refused to start. I had the car
towed to the dealer and it started immediatley after they put it down from the
tow.

Hmm, Not what I experienced. When the car shut
down the first time I did think I was going to have to
get out and push it through the intersection. It
definitely did not "start" in the normal sense. However when
I turned the key to the 'ON' position I was able to
drive in Stealth mode.

After filling up I don't
recall if the ICE started immediately or started after I
drove away from the pump. Nothing unusual caught my
attention. It was a very encouraging experience for me as a
hidden safety feature of this car since people are
permitted to drive on the breakdown lanes in Boston during
rush hour and stopping in one for any reason is taking
a huge risk.

Perhaps the difference is that
I filled the tank full? Are there issues with the
bladder in the tank & only putting in 2 gallons?

FYI,
I filled with 3 bars showing and put in
8.5 gal, somewhat trying to fill to the max. (auto
shut-off happened at 7ish gallons). This was my 1st
tankfull and don't have much of a
baseline.

Currently have 105 miles on this tank and still have all
bars lit. (Prox 46.something mpg)
Tony

Hi

When it happened to me, on I-5 also, I was going up a long 2-3 mile 6%
upgrade, probably going 65 mph. Was your situation similar?

Barry

Hi Barry,
My experience running out of gas
occurred below Sacramento. It is not a particularly steep
area of I 5. We only needed to travel 20 miles to
South Sac. when the last bar started to flash.
Unfortunately we only got less than 5 miles up the road when we
conked out. My greatest disappointment was that in the
past when I reached the blinking bar I traveled 40
miles to the nearest gas station and did not run out. I
know that it is common sense to not let the car get
that low on fuel but these two instances were quite
unusual circumstances. It makes me leary to allow the car
to pass below the third bar "just in case". Did you
have your car fully evaluated after running out of
gas?
