i have a 1998 toyota sienna and the power steering won't work. it makes these weird noises that don't sound to good. i added more fluid to the line on the resevoir, but every time i start the vehicle, it sucks all the fluid down and it makes those weird noises. so i added a little more and it still sucks it down. but when i turn off the car, it fills the powersteering resevoir up and it over flows. what could be the problem.

Maybe you have some air bubbles trapped in the system?

You would probably need to bleed the brake fluid out to try and get rid of the air bubbles.

if i take most of the fluid out and the resevoir is filled to the indicated line, and the pump does not make noise, could i still drive it aroud for a couple of miles? is anything bad going to happen?

If it leaked that fast it could be the pump but look for the leak before buying anything. Check the hoses going to the steering gear. Fill the pump with fluid and watch for a leak as someone turns the wheel. Holding it at full lock produces the most pressure but only keep it there for a few seconds at a time. Watch for fluid spraying and be careful not to get hit in the eyes (wear saftey glasses!) Good Luck.

Sounds like a hose... My old Honda Accord sprung a leak in the High Pressure hose, and it would squirt fluid onto the exhaust manifold, causing clouds of smoke. Was the smoke coming out of the exhaust, or the engine compatment. White acrid smoke from the exhaust sounds like it could be a head gasket. Just my $0.02... -Max-

Rather than buy new or even rebuilt, I just rebuilt the pump on my '93 Accord. I think the stuff was around $12 and it runs like new.
