am:

>What does one do if both sets of car keys are
lost?

You try to find one of those missing master keys
(usually black), and get a duplicate made!

The keys
have a little transponder in them, that syncronizes
(sp?) to one of the little computers (ECU) in the
Prius. Only a recognized key's signal can start the car.
You could have a hardware store make a spare metal
key, but without the trained transponder/chip in the
key that hardware store key will only get you into
the doors, and won't start the car. (This is the
engine immobilizer security feature on the
car.)

On the Group site, one dealership received a Prius
for delivery without any keys... The dealership had
to purchase and install a new ECU ($800+), and get
new keys/remotes (in the ~$100 range for a
key/remote).

The same event also occurred to another poster who
lost their only master key (dealership didn't provide
the 2 master/1 valet key when she purchased the used
Prius). The dealership had to install a new ECU and get
new keys ordered and made...

The short of it
is - don't loose all of your master keys! It'll
easily run you over $1000 (parts, labor, and the like)
to get your car in a movable condition again if you
loose them all.

(you (well, your dealer) can
only make a spare key if you have at least one master
key. ALL keys you have must be present when
programming a new spare key...)
