Hello together,
I bought me a very old Hiace (1980) one month ago, and I have problems with the engine, because it need's about 5 litres of oil on 1000 km. So it seems like the engine is broken but I have not the money to buy a new one. Maybe it's possibile to get two or three other old Hiace engines and my question is, is it possible to combine them?! I like to deconstruct them and take the best thinks of each engine.
Are there any manuals, how to deconstruct the engine and how to get it out of the car??
And some other questions, about thinks, I don't know, for what they are.
There is a black round think on the left side under the weel and I can pull it out and push it in.

And there is a metal think as well under the driver's seat, to pull out and push in.

A steel wire goes somewhere under the car to the gear.

Hope of helpful answers
Thx so far

Hey Janek,

You can't rebuild your engine using parts from other engines. It won't work. If it does, it won't last. You don't want an unreliable engine that stops in the middle of nowhere.

The best thing you can do is save your money and try to get a better van (later model, lower distance).

If you can't afford that, then a replacement (imported from Japan) engine is the next best option.

As for the things you show in the photos, I have never seen any of them before. The black knob on the dash - open the engine compartment and get someone to pull this knob out and push it in again - while you watch for movement in the engine bay.

One thing it *might* be is for the choke. Is your van a petrol one?

As for the lever under the seat - that is also a mystery. I have not seen a gearbox like that one before. Is it an automatic or a manual transmission?

Hi,
thanks for that answer. So far, I bought me a new engine...
And for your questions, it is a petrol engine and manuel transmission. A mechanic said, that the thing under the seat is maybe a 5th gear. But I don't know how to use it and with the new engine... I'll see what they work out.

I have not ever seen a gearbox with a linkage on the side of it like that. It sure looks like some kind of selector for an extra gear or overdrive range.

Some small trucks have a lever that allows you to select a high range or low range. So you have 4 or 5 gear positions in your vehicle, plus this extra lever - which effectively gives you 8 or 10 speeds.
Alternatively, it may be that when the lever is pulled out, and you select 4th (5th) which ever is top gear, it raises the gear ratio, like an overdrive.

If you went to a Toyota dealer they should be able to look the information up if they don't know it already.

The other thing that has me curious is the big round thing next to the linkage on the gearbox. It has two wires coming out of it. It looks like a small 12 V motor.
As to what it does ... ?
