Hello, first post here.. Just picked up a 91' LC today and noticed on the way home when driving along I can press on the gas to accelerate and it makes a sort of "clunk" sound that sounds like it's coming thru the floorboard..

Any ideas what could cause this? The truck has 194k miles on it - original motor and tranny... My first thought was U-Joints?

Thanks!

I picked up a 1991 Landcruiser 2 months ago and it had the exact same problem. Following hours of research, and finally disassembling the drive train of the vehicle, I discovered that the loud "clunk" that came when I would put gas on/off was slop/wear that had developed in the front Birfield joints (the landcruiser version of a CV joint). The diffs were fine as well as all of the U-joints. The good news was finally finding out where the clunk was coming from and fixing the problem. The bad news was that the OEM Toyota replacement parts were $801 CAN per side!

Yep, the Birfields can go bad at about 180K. They will clunk pretty loud when turning sharply at low speed as well. They are expensive to replace, but used parts are available from www.cruiserparts.net
at substancial discount.
