I picked up a 1991 Landcruiser 2 months ago and it had the exact same problem. Following hours of research, and finally disassembling the drive train of the vehicle, I discovered that the loud "clunk" that came when I would put gas on/off was slop/wear that had developed in the front Birfield joints (the landcruiser version of a CV joint). The diffs were fine as well as all of the U-joints. The good news was finally finding out where the clunk was coming from and fixing the problem. The bad news was that the OEM Toyota replacement parts were $801 CAN per side!
