I way I read my gas guage and it is pretty accurate. There are ten blocks/bar going across the gauge. I count each bar as one gallon of gas. I count the bars, and when I see only two bars, I know I must fill-up.
I've heard the gas tank is like a bellows and may not give you an accurate readout on fuel consumption. I notice that I think I'm getting great mileage because the bars aren't going down as I am drivng, but fool me, the next morning I've gone down two bars; which when I look at my mileage makes sence, I can't run on fumes.
I am experienting and will now try to keep the tank always more than half full. Two of my friends also have the Prius and also white ones. We all enjoy driving the car.
