hello
i would like to share my views regarding your question. since you are in california, it might be difficult to do conversions of this kind because of your environmental protection regulations.
here in manila, conversion is in practice because it is too expensive to change the whole airconditioning system of a 1991 car from R-12 to R-134a. the cost of conversion (to replace system into brand new one) is about 25-30% of the selling price of your car.
however, it is still possible to convert your R-12 into R-134a utilizing all of the original component except the dryer, oil and freon gas. You just have to find an aircon specialists (a Filipino whose trade back in Manila is also on auto airconditioning for quite a time if you can find one) and talk about the matter.
It is just flushing the whole aircon system with a special equipment found in aircon shops. it is to collect the R-12 and containing it from spillage to the atmosphere. replace the dryer with the one specified for use in R-134a. then put the specified oil for R-134a application (i think they call it canela oil) and finally recharge it with R-134 refrigerant. presto you have a better quality of cool air similar to when you first rolled out from the garage.
good luck
