Rod and Custom did an article this month "Foreign Exchange", in which they showed some engines that were in non-traditional street rod/hot rods. LC Engineering had some pics of their 22R engine that had been done up for performance. There was also a pic of a track T that had a 3T-C motor in it with Z240 sidedraft carbs on it. The LCE people used a set of Webbers on their engine, but a good pair of them can cost more than the engine block. Never the less, I am interested in finding out all the information on the 2T-C and 3T-C engines that I can. Being totally unfamiliar with these engines and trannys, I have some novice questions to ask here.
1. What is the designation differences? In other words, is the R-20 and R-22 heads or engines? I am thinking that the 3T-C is best suited for my purposes, but do not know for sure. I am also thinking a '74-'82 engine would be best to look for.
2. What tranny is adapted to them, both automatic and standard. I am looking for the automatic for my needs, but don't know the designation or name for such.
3. What is the width of the rear end that would work on these engine/tranny combos? Will a toyota truck rear end be what is best to look for, or a Corolla? Is there a difference in the gear ratio on them that is significant? I am looking for economy more than torque and power.
I am not looking for break-neck speed, so the LCE stuff for performance upgrades is nice, but not what I am looking for. I am hoping to find a good salvagable motor and tranny from a local wrecking yard when I get ready to purchase the engine. I am currently working on removal of the stock Model A items, so I am not at the point of buying the Toyota engine and tranny just yet though.
Anyone have some good pics of a 2T-C or 3T-C engine to share? I am also looking for pics of the engine and tranny outside the engine bay.
I realize this is not a typical Toyota question, but I am interested in this swap and also in finding out more about the engines. Any particular personal web sites that may be helpful? Thanks, huey
